Program Description

Body

Andrew Carnegie built his first steel mill in Braddock in 1875. He later added the Homestead plant and the one in Duquesne to create a massive steel empire in the Mon Valley, employing tens of thousands of workers. He hired Henry Clay Frick to help him manage the mills and turn them into non-union shops. While Braddock and Duquesne were easy, the Homestead plant was steadfast in its desire to keep the union. The Battle between management and labor took a terrible turn on July 6, 1892. Join us for a fascinating story of Mon Valley history!
